Why is there such a need to paint thin women as oppressors that the fat acceptance movement needs so desperately to pain all criticism as “fat shaming”?
In my comments on “thin privilege”, I DID state that I am categorically against ALL forms of discrimination and bullying, including bullying people for their weight.
I DID NOT decry fat women for being fat, for, as I stated, there may be any number of reasons for body size, including health reasons, medications or other reasons.
I do object to women being reduced to their bodies, which is objectification, and this is exactly what the FA movement does to me: I am thin (due to no fault of my own), but I am somehow the bad, evil woman because I criticize this movement’s obsession with thinness!
I do object to their comparison to civil rights, gay rights, rights of handicapped people, etc. Hitler literally killed Jewish, black, gay, and handicapped people. This is why these people are covered by anti-discrimination laws. True, there are other forms of discrimination: ageism, lookism and discrimination against heavier people. This is expecially apparent in fields such as air travel, service jobs, entertainment, modeling and sports. Being turned down for your “dream job”, however, pales in comparison to being literally murdered for your color (which happens frequently to black people in the US) or sexual orientation (like Matthew Shepard). NO ONE is being killed for being fat. Period.
What I am saying is not “fat shaming”. Fat people are not a protected minority because their problems are “first world problems”. Meanwhile, people in Yemen are still starving….women in many nations are still being genitally mutilated… so let’s get our priorities straight and put an end to “competing for victimhood”!
